Our Journey
A few years ago, we learned something heartbreaking: many children in care homes and shelters don’t receive a Christmas present. Some children arrive with nothing but the clothes on their back; no books to help them fall asleep, no teddies to cuddle for comfort.
That’s when Julie, along with three other trustees, founded A Child’s Heart –- created from the belief that childhood is about being care-free and believing in magic. We can’t fix everything, but we can help them believe in Christmas.
Becoming an official charity has allowed us to reach even more children in vulnerable situations across our community. Every December, our team of elves, tiptoe into homes and shelters to put gifts under the tree ready for Christmas morning. Each child—from newborns to 18-year-olds—receives not just one present, but a jumbo sack of their very own filled with age-appropriate toys, books, crafts, toiletries, and delicious chocolate.
Our mission is simple: to remind every child that Santa hasn’t forgotten them.
For the little believers, it’s a spark of magic—the kind that lights up their whole face and warms their heart, making the world feel safe. For older children, it’s a powerful message—they are seen, they are valued, and they are not alone. For families in shelters and refuges, it’s one less worry—Christmas is taken care of, and they can enjoy a moment of normality together.
Every elf at A Child’s Heart says the best gift they receive each year is the thank-you letters from the homes and shelters on behalf of the children and families we help. Those words of joy and gratitude show us that our time and effort have made a difference—for us, that’s the real Christmas magic.
